I still question the whole "alcoholism is a disease" thing. I agree with Ferguson's statement that certain types of people can't drink, but I don't think it has much to do with the booze.

people tend to think of disease as a condition caused by an external pathogen, or a condition involving biological malfunction.
Alcoholism certainly fits the definition of a disease insofar as it is a condition of the organism which causes biological harm - it just so happens that the disease has its origins in the configuration of neuronal tissue.
Psychological phenomena can't exist without their biological substrates.
Every thought we have is reflected by an event on the neurological level.
