Got X Box 360 and am trying to set up the online gaming. At first, it showed everything OK, but now it shows it fails the IP test.
Is there funny stuff about setting X Box up?
I am connected through a router, but like I said, the first time it showed it passed with a valid IP.....192.xxx.xxx.xxx etc.

wireless? wired? what brand/model router are you using?

Wired, Netgear.
At first, when testing it showed everything connected and good. Then when I went to setup an account, it keeps showing IP failed when testing. I know it has a valid IP.

i don't know how the setup steps are for the 360, but are you able to ping the 360's IP address fine? are you supposed to forward any ports for the 360 to access Live or whatever?

It doesn't say anything about port forwarding or which port it uses.
I can't ping it because it doesnt show an IP right now.
In my router settings it doesn't recognize it as an installed device. I'll have to check the cable, although the light on the router is on for that device so the cable is connecting....Odd.

Jesus Christ, I musta gone through a dozen tries already and it never gives out a fucking ip.

No. I gave up. It will not find an IP address for the stupid thing.
Don't know what to try next.

Maybe the router blocked your access somehow?

Perhaps try resetting the router, don't know if that would do anything, but worth a shot. Also try a different cable. Both of these are shots in the dark, but they might help.

can you not manually set ip/dns in the 360?
some setups are just glitchy when it comes to dhcp.
do either of you have more than one router on your network? or an ics machine?

i just set up its tcp/ip manually. dhcp can be a bitch sometimes. just make sure you give it a high number so theres some wiggle room left in case of a routercrash or whatever

Ensure the following:
MAC address filtering is disabled on your router. And if it is, make sure the MAC address from your 360's NIC is in there.
The DHCP service on the router is enabled
And have you tried the following:
Tried a different cable
Tried a different port on the router
Tried manually setting an ip for your subnet range
