so I just stayed home all weekend and got sucked into this game that I got from a bargain bin., and holy shit was it addictive. the idea behind it is awesome yet microsoft as usual could give a fuck about the actual production of it...it could have been so much better. Anyway , the ones that have played it, could you make any recommendations to other games that take a similar approach to space exploration?

Do you mean 'couldn't give a fuck'?

You could try the X-series (X2 and X3 specifically).... The voice acting really put me off but there's a lot of scope for exploration and shit. You have to put some hours in to get used to the control scheme though, unlike Freelancer with its Tonka-Toy approach to controls.

the controls were easy to use, they did a good job with that imo

Yep that's what I mean. The controls in freelancer were very basic and mostly GUI driven. Plus I dunno if you noticed but you only ever navigated 2 dimensions and not 3 since all the planets and objects were on a single plane of space. The only time I had to dip up and down was during dogfights.

So other space trader games take a bit more adjusting to.

You could try Oolite which is a modern, free version of Elite (for PC, Mac, Linux) with opportunities to create missions and draw from a collection already made by other users.

I don't get Eve Online. I tried the demo, and it was like playing Excel.

The ships may look ok, but the planets are just a big hangar for your ship and your character is a brain in a bottle. In a ship. Or something.

That's not like Freelancer at all imo.

depends on how you played freelancer :)
the SP game is an actual campaign. the MP game however is a trading/diabloesque game. though very lacking in the quests department.

I played the shit out of freelancer. I had the Titan, alien weapons and everything, I found the planet of the robots and the planet of the apes, the lost Hispaniola, EVERYTHING. SEVERAL TIMES.

But all that was more or less interesting, even if the missions could get a bit boring.
When I'm 'playing' Eve I just don't know why I should even bother. Just to make some numbers go up?

freelancer's a fucking fantastic game, and the interface's so simple that plained could headstalk his way through it.

i wish there was an mp game that had the same sort of feel and simplicity for general trade/mooching about - but then a more serious flight model for combat.

tried a lot of different space games and they all seemed to have too many buttons or not enough.
