This may sound stupid, but I am very very very computer illliterate so I need help. the last time I tried quake3 online was some years ago on dial up modem. Since then I have upgraded to cable modem and now I cant get anything for multiplayer. everytime I click on Multiplayer from the main menu, it gives me a message "no response from master server" I dont understand it. I dont have a firewall running that I know of, the windows firewall is listed as off. I dont have any sort of addons for quake 3 right now, so I am trying it with just the install right out of the box. Can anyone help?

First thing you should do is read the STICKY, and download the latest
point release 1.32
after installing the 1.32 patch, make sure youre punkbuster is updated, to manually update PB use this:
pbsetup.exe

Well, I tired that, as near as I can tell, I downloaded the PR1.32 and ran punkbuster but something is still not right, now the gamewont even load, when I try to load it the screen just goes white and freezes. What am I still missing?

Thats wierd mate.
I would suggest you did a quick reinstall of Q3A and update it to 1.32. Without even installing any mods you should still be able to at least browse servers in the multiplayer screen.

Do other OpenGL games work (think ET, RtcW, etc.)? If so, it might be PB locking up your system.
Start

Run

"C:\Path\To\Quake3\quake3.exe" +cl_pb_disable
Does the problem persist?

I get this problem when I don't run through all the patches in order... I would assume going straight to 1.32 would work, but it didn't for me either.

The white screen on bootup is often due to Punkbuster contacting its servers when quake first loads. If a firewall blocks the request, or the internet connection is down, it stays on the white screen for up to about 2 minutes. You can wait it out if necessary and it should eventually pass it.
Often it hangs there because your firewall is blocking the request, but quake won't drop out of fullscreen to show you the firewall prompt. In this case, you can try ALT-ESCAPE or ALT-TAB or WIN-ESCAPE to get back to windows, or alternatively you can force Q3 to start up windowed by adding +set r_fullscreen 0 to the game's shortcut.
