due to reasons I shan't decribe here, I can not boot up from my Vista partition.
I desperately need some data on there though.

The regular tools dont work (not Vista compatible)
anybody know what I can do?

is the partition actually shafted or is it just that you can't reach it with vista?

get a live cd like juggs said (e.g. knoppix) and boot from that, it should be able to give you read access to the drive. if you don't like linux then there may be pre-built bartPE bootable win disks on some timber-shivering torrent site.

if the partition is toast, then you'll need to look at data recovery tools. the last time i had to do anything like that, i remember the shareware section of snapfiles being useful.

The knoppix CD sounds like the best bet. Data recovery tools are unlikely to be Visa-compliant at this point but I could be wrong on that.

don't make me smash your skirt.

knoppix cd + pen drive = yay if you can't access your partition.

If you want something windows xp flavored give this a try

http://www.ubcd4win.com/

You can also add your own apps to the cd (but it comes with a bunch of good utilities already)
