Someone tried to steal my car

Or break into it...I dunno for sure exactly what happened.
I was in the wal-mart for about 10 minutes getting some shop rags.
when i get back to my car, the lock on the driver's door was pushed way back in and the door handle was loose, such that the entire door handle enclosure sort of pulled off the door when you went to open it.
No other damage done. My car was parked next to a giant SUV, so whoever did it had a bit of a blind spot to cover them. I don't know if maybe they were trying to pop the lock out or something and get in, and maybe they only had a small window of opportunity to succeed - so that if they didn't get it on the first try they just moved on.
At least the door lock still works with the key fob deal.
The car is a WRX and the guy I bought it from had put an entirely new exhaust sytem on it - from the downpipe on, as well as a new air intake - work that totalled over a couple thousand dollars. Would have sucked to lose it considering I would never get another for the price with the low miles it had (bought it from a very wealthy family who was moving and in a big fucking hurry to sell it so I got it for a great deal).
Does anyone know if this sounds like the work of a potential 'pro' who didn't succeed or just dumbass vandal? It just has the stock stereo (which is decent - 6 disc changer, etc.) but not worth stealing by ay means.

Zomg move to a better neighborhood.
But seriously...I've only ever heard of shitty cars being stolen, especially with all the fancy laser cut computer keys and immobilizer systems they use today. Someone with knowledge to drive away with a WRX should be carrying a slim-jim. On top of that, who steals a car during the day at a Wal-Mart? To me it sounds like some dumbass newb. Perhaps a poor junky looking for fix money with your stereo, cds, and anything other shit you may have left behind.

Your insurance should replace like-for-like or give you an accurate payout for the value of the vehicle... This shouldn't be a problem. If it is... consider getting better insurance with more cover or from a provider with better terms. Sure you might need to pay more, but it sounds like it's a legitimate concern so it'd probably be worth the investment.

Because shitty cars are wayyyy easier to steal (usually because people don't even lock them) and are less conspicuous after they are stolen. Sure, they wont be targeted by a chop shop but someone just looking to steal a car is going to go for the easy way out.
I had a friend who's car was such a POS it broke down after it got stolen. They found it with a screw driver in the ignition on the side of some road and a failed fuel pump lol.

A friend of a friend had his car stolen one night at a concert, only later to find out the cops found it with a bunch of used needles strewn about.

There was this guy who got his radio stolen a couple times.
This time he didn't replace the radio, and also left a note on his dash that said "No radio".
He went to his car and saw his window smashed, with a note on the dash that said "Just checking".

fucking lousy criminals. Getting that lock repaired asap, or are you going to give me a few more days to finish executing my diabolical plans using your car as cover?

It was stolen for temporary use apparently.

Imagine, someone tried to break in in mine, Cherokee LTD 1990, 2 flat tires, rusty rocker panels… May be they wanted the gold mags wheels stored in the back.

i am actually a little worried about my car being stolen, in the GTA and in Hamilton ( the sorrounding area's ) there has been ~8 stolen in the past 6 months..... Ohh yea, that dosent sound like much right? There are only ~20-30 of them.
p.s. TNF: it was a noob if they tryed to punch the lock, as was said before a slimjim would have made a ~5 second Job to open the door, or breaking the window would have taken even less.. and if they taped the window it wouldent have made much noise or mess....
So, you had some Shitfaced teen thinking he was the shit and got spooked off.

Let this be a lesson that nothing good can come from shopping at walmart.

I bet this wouldn't have happened if you had visited Target instead.

My neighborhood is full of druggies, and stolen cars routinely get dropped off in our parking lot. However no-one has ever touched my car. Blue-flashing LED alarms are uber-popular in my area, so I bought a clearanced $20 Bulldog alarm from Walmart and popped off the red led and stuck on a blue one. I do stash away most viewable items though, excluding the satellite radio receiver velcroed onto the dash.

Looks like I'm horribly uninformed.
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, a vehicle is stolen every 25.5 seconds in the United States. In 2005, 1,235,226 motor vehicles were reported stolen which is 2,625 fewer than in 2004. Only 62.1% of stolen vehicles were recovered in 2005.
In Nevada, the ten vehicles that are the most likely to be stolen are:
1. 1996 Honda Accord
2. 1995 Honda Civic
3. 1990 Toyota Camry
4. 1994 Saturn SL
5. 1992 Nissan Sentra
6. 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup
7. 1988 Toyota Pickup
8. 1998 Dodge Neon
9. 2001 Ford F150 Series
10. 1993 Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee
In 2005, the Las Vegas area was considered the second worst metropolitan area in the nation for auto thefts. Only Modesto, CA had a higher rate, on a per capita basis.
I always figured that if you're willing to risk getting caught, might as well and go large.
