Recovering Songs from iPod

One of my friends recently had her computer crash and had to replace her HDD, thus losing all her music and whatnot. She has an iPod and the songs are still on the iPod. I recall when I connected my iPod after reinstalling Windows once it deleted all the songs that weren't on my iTunes playlist, I guess the truly mean synchronizing to the computer. My question is, how might she be able to get her songs from her iPod to her computer without iTunes deleting anything?

And then how might you retrieve the songs? I know you can get them directly from the iPod via My Computer, but doesn't iTunes sort the songs in a strange way and rename them on the iPod?
If I recall isn't there a program that will get the songs from the iPod?

I've heard of a program called TuneTools that allows you to take songs off of an ipod.
I've personally never used it though.

sharpod will allow you to rip them as well...
You will need to track it down though.

Ok so the consensus is that there are a number of 3rd party tools that can do the job just fine...

You dont even need a third party tool. Connect the ipod in disk mode, so itunes wont open. Then go in Windows explorer or whatnot depending on your OS. Find the iPod drive, It might be called USB mass storage device. Then Make sure you can see the hidden folders, google search how if you cant. Go into its songs, youll see its split into several folders. Highlight all of the files in one folder at a time, and just drag them to itunes. Do all the folders and your songs get peiced back together.
