AM2 cpu fan but the cpu dymentions are larger than cooler

so I got this

it claims that it's build for Am2 sockets as well, yet when i received it I realized my athlon 64 x2's dimensions are much larger than the cooler's contact plate...If I install this thing then there will be a big area of the cpu's outer edges that will not be getting any direct cooling.
like wtf, is this false advertisement or can i still use this cooler for my 64 x2? why would there be a diff. between the cpu and the cooler's dimentions?
