I wanna goof around and make some music. I have had beats in my head forever. Wanna get them out and in my ipod, just for myself.


So whats good? Reason? I like a lot of music, but recently i like a lot of like alien type, ambient, trippy, energetic, tribal stuff.

get a hookie copy of reason - if you're just messing about.

it has everything in a single program.

FruityLoops is very intuitive and easy to get into.
You quickly pick up how the main components interact.
You will be loading your own samples, building some patterns and arranging them into a simple song in about half an hour.
And it has reasonable depth if you delve a little deeper.

Reason is more powerful but is also much more complex.
It takes quite a while to figure things out.
You'll spend hours before you get the same results you get with your half hour FruityLoops knowledge.
But after that you benefit from its versatility.

reason is a big pack of tools which consists of everything you need to make a track, from drum machines to mastering tools, it can be very powerfull, and easy to play around for begginers... if you wanna be serius about it get cubase and plenty of vst`s

Cubase seems overly complicated. I've been trying to use it to record/mix my guitar stuff and I'm finally making progress but the interface seemed almost alien for a while.

I use Sonar 6

Don't start with Cubase... it's a bit too complex if you're just getting into recording. It's meant to be used with professional grade hardware, etc. If you just have a comp mic going into a consumer soundcard it's a waste of time. You should check out Adobe Audition which is basically a revamped version of Cool Edit Pro, it's quite nice. Very powerful, similar interface to Cubase, but it's a bit easier on resources and it's a bit easier to figure out as well.

Cool. I have a male-male cable going from my amp to my line-in but yea I pretty much have low-end desktop hardware.

you can do everything in cubase with a cheap sound card, it doesnt realy matter....
