MX300/MX500 Driver Installation?

Sorry if this is covered somewhere else but searching this site and google i couldn't come up with an answer.
I just came across the mousescore benchmarking article at esreality and I had a question about the driver installation process for the mx300/mx500.
I haven't been gaming in about a year and a half and i just started getting back into it.
My question was, what are the steps to installing the drivers for the mx300? should I just install the newest mouseware for the mx300? I remember back a couple years ago, the way many gamers were installing the drivers was to extract the mouseware installation .exe file into a folder and manually install the drivers without the software. is that still the right way to go?
