i replayed it recently. it really was a dispiriting experience - no really memorable moments and the weapons balance is hilarious. the Q2 palette never really yanked my crank either

the weapon balance is decent for noobs who can't hit crap with rail and flail around like a retard with chain.

I'm not overly concerned with weapons balance in a single player game. I thought it was pretty fun. Replayed it myself last week.
