Well, in private hands it would be hard to sell for full value (gold farming sites give you way less for it). But current prices range from $96 to $200+ for 1000g depending on where you go and what server you are on.

A quick Google reveals that I could get 5000 Gold on any EU server for about 125 €.

Not sure this makes the deal any better but I've heard there are lots of people who speculate on items in the auction house to make tons of money.

Looks aside, if he was one of those he probably just got a girlfriend for less effort than any of us has to put in. (movies, dinner, talks about feelings, etc.)
