Computer -> Home Theater Amp

i hooked up my rents Media center ( my old one 
) And it came time to plug it into the amp, so i went for a Toslink Connection ( optical ) And plugged it right into the amp, did the setup both in windows and in the MEdiacenter GUI ( Same thing really.. )
Now the problem is the following: the amp is only playing out of the Sub and Front two channels. So when i pop in a Movie, all i get is the Front background noise and the bass, yet if i play TV ( Stereo ) i get great sound.
The point that i dont get is that the amp is set to surround, the computer is set to 5.1 and yet i am having this problem.
Anyone have an idea whats going on here? and what i should do to try and sort it out? i dont se why its stuck in Stereo mode.

Asus p4p800-e Deluxe ( using the Onboard HD AC Soundcard )
