CD/DVD Writing Software

Any recommendations?
I've been using Nero, but it seems more and more like bloatware with each new version/update. I also ended up with a small stack of coasters yesterday with a new pack of my favourite brand of CD's. I thought it was the CD's, the writer or the file itself, before tracing the problem down to Nero itself.
I basically need to create and burn ISO's, backup files, duplicate discs, the usual stuff, etc.

I'm using Nero 7 for general burning and DVDFab Platinum for DVD video. If DVDFab runs into a problem I use ripit4me which controls DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter for a perfect burn every time (just takes longer).
I never get coasters but the latest CDR media I got tends to skip around the middle.

I'm using Ritek CD's, fails in Nero on two different computers with 3 different writers. CD's work fine with demo version of DeepBurner. I tried updating Nero but the update installer seems to hang. Every. Single. Time. :icon33:

Avoid Roxio. CDBurnerXP Pro is ok but not a comprehensive solution (fucks up adding lots of files when trying to back up your documents to CD, for example). Nero really does seem to be the best of a bad batch although when its screwed up its not good at all (had to reformat my work laptop just to get it to install, and I've heard of issues like yours before where its just some random fickle issue thats producing a lot of coasters).

Yeah, tell me about it! In no way could I get the update to install and even tried to install the latest trial version. Not sure exactly what I did, but I finally managed to download the latest version and reinstalled it. What a nightmare. Still doesn't guarantee the CD media will work, though... I'll have to test it sometime and risk some more coasters.
All this because I needed to install a 32-bit version of Ubuntu on a test server.
