issues with logging into a server that requires a password

i setup a dedicated q3 server for some buddies of mine that live in different locations nowadays to play on. intended to just be a private server, so i configed for clients to provide password.
the problem is, i can't figure out how you SUPPLY the password. when i go into q3 client and multiplayer, internet, specify.. tehre's no password box, just address and port. when i put the address and port in, it connects to the server, but it doesn't prompt for a password or anything, just just says "INVALID PASSWORD"
any ideas? is there a way to connect to the server with a password from the console?
