Right. I've got a scratch 2 inches long in me monitor from the i20 LAN party last year. Which sucks. Ample opportunity to upgrade to a flat panel, I tells myself. But wait.. what's that being yodelled from over in yonder adjacent valley? "yoooo knowww notheeeeng abooout flatpanellllsss!". Hans is correct.

Low response rate, slick looks, 17inch minimum, mid-range price (2-300 English Bones). I *think* this is the criteria. Please suggest changes if I'm not seeing the whole picture :D

I've seen this and in principle an 8ms response time makes me shit my pants. Is my excrement justified?

I have a Acer AL1714 with 14ms response and its a beuaty!
I tried two others before i bought that one..both had 25ms response and i tried all three with:
Painkiller
Quake 3 arena
Farcry
Doom 3
Joint ops

no worries at all.. its only the old(a year back?)ones that apperantly cant run fast FPS games.

Buy one man... its rock solid!

Dell apparently makes really good flat panel displays.

I know IBMs flatpanels are shit, both style-wise and image quality.

We buy them in at work, the high end too.. they just stink, IMO.

Will check out dell (though they just rebranded?)

Did they? Can't see any mention of it on their website.

Rebranded LG's I believe, Dell or Apple (or Both). I hear great thinks about Dell displays either way.

Viewsonic VP171B.

8ms response time. Great reviews. Make sure you get the 8ms version. The same model number is used on the 16ms version.

Most likely, you'll be buying this online. Most tech stores don't carry it.

Too bad you scratched one of your monitors and need to replace it. I'll be selling three pristine Samsung 900IFTs as soon as a 21 inch OLED hits the market.

Edit: Here is a picture of the 16ms version, but they look the same on the outside. Just make sure wherever you buy it from clearly says 8ms on the page.

No speakers, minimal screen edge... looks perfect.

Scan don't carry it, so I'll check overclockers and failing that, scrape around on EBuyer (they suck but if it's the only way...).

Cheers rep!

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 172x, and it's great. 12ms response time, no ghosting, great interpolation and good colors. Pretty cheap too.

The 711N is 25ms, so not that good for games. Although the 1000:1 contrast ratio is nice.
