...put their protocol version in the server name?

I'm using Xfire, and I can't find any protocol version 68 matches.
Don't you think it would be much easier if people started putting their protocol version in their server name?

I, for one, think it would.

Anyways, if anybody knows of a 68 server (on Xfire), that would be a much better alternative than testing each server.

i've never used Xfire, but in the All Seeing Eye you can filter it that way.

"display raw server info" will show you what protocol it is

but anyway, you should really use the all-seeing eye for quake. It has all the filters so you can sort servers by mod or by patch. ase is pretty much dead (not developed anymore) but it still rocks for quake.
