so after signing up with a new isp I'm planning on setting up a wireless router so I can access the net from a few other devices I have laying around. What I would like to do before I set this all up is see who all around my apartment complex can see and access my signal.

I'm wondering if there is a program out there that can tell me this, and then via their mac address deny access to my router, or something to that equivalent. Just for a little added security.

hide your SSID and encrypt your signal then don't worry about it.

What you actually want to be doing is the exact opposite. Explicitly define 'good' mac addresses and reject all others. There's more chance of there being a feature for this on your router than the other way round. Also, this route doesn't require you to audit your neighbors shit.

mac filtering anymore is almost a waste of time.

ok, I was just wanting to be able to view everyone who could see my access point, and block them manually. But being as I don't know much about this I'll do as suggested.

if you dont have a wireless router yet, do yourself a favor and get the linksys wrt54g

Install third party firmware, like DD-WRT. With it, you can go to your router page, and check who is connected to your wireless network.

Use WPA2 + AES encryption.Use secure passwords.

MAC addresses can be easily spoofed and people can still find your SSID with certain tools. So neither offers much more protection.

sort of on-topic question - is there much apart from hiding the ssid that can be done to secure an old wep-protected connection?

i need wep so that my elderly palm can connect.

have got a wireless router that only accepts wpa, and set a repeater up to allow wep - so potentially something could be done to treat connections from the two separately?

There's things you could do, but the only one I can come up with is pretty elaborate. You'd be better off buying a second NIC for the computer you sync your palm with, and put in a seperate wireless access point directly on that PC so that your palm and PC can sync on an isolated network.

Does your router support Vlans?
