Just read about it on bbc, they described how the bombs were detected - not sure this is a good idea. Sif telling the designers what their design flaws were!! its like helping them imo

The news here, for the most part, is making it sound like these things were exactly like the bombs in iraq and would have caused 100's of deaths. The former head of the CIA's antiterror unit was on Olbermann, and they finally pointed out that these bombs wouldn't have caused much damage outside of the car itself.

Well the car was a W124 Mercedes, why destroy such a nice car is completely beyond me.

"It is obvious that if the device had detonated there could have been significant injury or loss of life," Clarke said. "The vehicle was parked in one of the busiest parts of central London in the early hours of Friday morning when many, many people were leaving nightclubs and other places after the evening hours."

Not sure what's gained by minimizing the intent?

Just going off of what was stated by the former head of counter-terrorism in the CIA under Bush 1. Not exactly a guy I would describe as a died in the wool liberal.

His analysis was that someone 30 feet from the car wouldn't have much but maybe some ear damage at the sound of the explosion. The way everything was configured he didn't see it throwing shrapnel out in a wide blast like the more sophisticated car bombs you see in Iraq.
But yea, if it was really crowded on the street with several people standing around the car, that could be bad.

And one thing - to clarify the intent issue - I didn't mean to downplay the issue of intent - the intent here was to injure and/or kill, regardless of how many they were after it was a terrible thing.

But I think sometimes overexaggerating the real danger posed by a device such as this, no matter how evil the intent was, can be detrimental. So don't downplay the intent to kill, but don't overdo the extent to which the device could have killed I would say.

EDIT: To be fair, its probably too early for anyone outside of the immediate situation (meaning outside of the bomb squad, etc.) to say with certainty how much, or how little, damage could have occurred.

Well the had been going down hill, around 1997 to 2002 or maybe later depending on model, were the bad years. The quality has been improving and they jumped to 5 in the IQS, the S-Class beating all of Lexus. I do believe that Mercedes is coming back and is going to continue that trend. This is irrelevant though because the W124 ran from 1985-1995. Since that one has the side stripes and not the side claddings it is 1989 or older. I have a 1990 300E, love it.

Relevancy, relevancy!

Ah yes, it's much easier to push your agendas when you can capture a "suspect" on "crystal clear" camera footage :smirk:

Over here, the only ones who drive Mercedes are taxi drivers and old geezers. BMW has taken over and are dominating the "European luxury car" segment, with Audi as a (cheaper) close second.

The airport has been evacuated and all flights suspended following the incident at 1515 BST.
Mission accomplished, I guess?
