biking east on bloor street between huron and st. george (downtown toronto) at a fast clip (around 35 kph) and a car door opens right before i pass it. I had no time to even begin thinking about pressing the brakes. I flew off the bike, and got some serious air time - I actually flew proper.
As I was flying, I remember yelling "FUCKER!!!!"
I landed on my side and rolled, and immediately got up, and walked towards the parked car - I had flown about 3-4 metres through the air, and rolled another metre or so. The couple emerged from the car, and they were in as much shock as I was.
I was completely unhurt and despite the shock, felt very calm. They were in disbelief about the whole affair - the woman was saying how her day couldn't get any worse and now this. She was thanking me for not yelling at her, asked if i was ok, etc. She kept saying: "You flew!"
I moved my body around to check if i was hurt, and couldn't feel anything. Not a single fucking scratch - I think the huge air time gave my body time to plan a good landing.
Bike was fine too - the brake lever which had hit the door was a bit twisted, but other than that it was fine (heavy mountain bike), so I continued along my journey. 10 minutes later, when I arrived, I was shaking, and felt like crying - considering the velocity involved, I was lucky not to be on a stretcher...
A few hours later, the pain started - top of my thigh, beneath hip, seriously bruised. Hand muscles also a bit damaged, but nothing serious.
Went to check out the leg at the hospital today, took an x-ray to be sure - everything's cool - doctor says because the bruise is so deep, it'll take some time to show, and it's gonna get more painful over the next 48 hours as the bruise makes its way up to the surface - recommended advil every few hours.
Should heal up in a week or so I hope.

bike lanes aren't always wide enough to avoid the open doors of parked cars.
You're really at the mercy of passengers in the cars on certain stretches.

I ride in the middle of the street on some roads when I easily go 30MPH just because I know some cunt is going to try to pass me. I make it difficult on them...

When I'm downtown, I not only have to look out for cars and pedestrians, but also streetcar rails. I ride 700x23 tires and they are the perfect width to get stuck in between rails.
I flipped once while changing lanes and getting my front tire stuck. I had a bloody knee but I remember being much more worried about the condition of my bike. Scratched my Shimano Ultegra break lever caps (little metal pieces that covers up the screws). Although they are strictly cosmetic, they cost me $30 bucks to replace! Bike parts are so expensive.
BTW...

i got the thick tires (the tubes i use are 26x1.9-2.125) but I use the continental tires (which a lot of cops in the city use)
great speed boost - my mountain bike weighs a tonne, but with those tires I can cruise at 40+ in good wind conditions.

my dad is a retard about cycling, he probably has 6-7 different bikes all worth $2000+... only think that is different to me is that they're light and uncomfortable as hell.

Then you need a new saddle and probably get fitted to your bike properly. You shouldn't have to feel uncomfortable while riding and riding off the saddle is a really inefficient use of energy.
And I ride a road bike so those mountain tires are out of the question. Won't even fit between the brake pads. On the other hand, I like the look on people's faces when I zip pass their car on the left lane. And I never heard of anyone getting a ticket for speeding.

There are a shitload of spandex-clad road bike riding dickheads that block traffic around the business park where I work. The idiots seem to think that they can ride three abreast wherever they damn well please. I hope they all get run the fuck over.
