Well... I'm not saying anything... You can probably hear the laughter from where you are...

Image

I mean... Come on, are they even trying? BTW, its offical, its in-game, and this IS the game that "beats the E3 trailer/looks better, and will be the best looking game out" that Sony keep harping on about.

Thoughts?

"Yup, its real. A bit early, but its real. Not photoshopped, in-game etc. 100% real. Shame about the size. They could have linked to a better, less squished size.

EDIT: When I say "early" I mean, "released early in the day", and not "an early build". The screenshots were taken on the latest version of the game as it was on Saturday.

yes at first look , it's outdated but take a look around his crotch/upper leg area...what's going on there? is that in the skin texture? If not I think there is some very impressive shading going on. And to be fair the quality settings look like they are set on low, I simply can't believe it looks that shit in some areas.

It looks likea form of rim lighting, which is possibly one of the worst inventions ever because it not only looks unreal, but also a bag of shite. COD uses it, as well as MOH, however MOH over uses it waaaay to much.

As for what you said about the lighting and shading... Its just simple normal mapping, taken from a light source to shade the texture, its not exactly new. xbox and even some PS2 games did that 5 years ago. Every surface in Doom 3 does it, for example.

it might just be a good image of it, but I thought it looked more natural than anything I've personally seen in Doom 3 for example, I'd have to look again, haven't been playing games much lately

Well, Doom 3 has an issue, because its black by default and then lit by random lights. What this means is that things like player textures are usually quite poor looking because they can be pure black.

You can fix this slightly by adding a single ambient light to the level that casts no shadows, and has a near black colour. This means you get no black shadow at all, but you still get dynamic shadowing. It just looks more natural.

Killzone 2, according to the tech they are using, is nothing like this. Its using dynamic shadow mapping, combined with standard higher res light maps. So, the shadow maps are gonna be quite fuzzy, but the local mapping will appear a lot more natural and subtle, because, well, the worlds not black.

Trouble is, this means that the lighting in the world will look much more fake, because its not REALLY real time. Think of it like HL2, but with more advanced shadow mapping.

EDIT: In fact, think of it like stalker. Exactly, like stalker.

lol, everything looks like it's got a flat matte over it, except the helmet, which looks like a highly waxed and polished car hood.

Watch the new E3 trailer instead. While it doesn't even look close to what we saw at E3 2005, it does look pretty good. The screenshot doesn't do it justice.

Actually, the trailer is a mixed bag of everything...

Textures suck ass. Fact. Its almost like they forgot what colour was. They are low resolution and compressed to hell and back. Except for faces which look ok, everything else is detailless.

Models, again, are a mixed bag. Some rock, some are stupidly high detail, others... Well... They just suck. This is a classic case of model swapping, where cinematic models are higher detail than game models. Gears does it.

However...

Animations are awesome (With the exception of the over done facial stuff). VERY fluid, very cool looking. This is a problem in its own right, because they are a little TOO good. You know when you watch something and it looks so good, you think "would it be the same if i played this again"? Well, I get the feeling that pretty much everything, while ingame, was set up this way. Nice animations whatever the case.

Sounds. The sound was by far the best thing in this trailer. It just sounded right.

As for the overall impact... I don't know... Killzone 1 had some of the worst gameplay for a FPS around when it came out, no matter how nice it looked. Killzone 2, well, so far it looks like a lot of smoke and mirrors. People are saying "wow this really shows everybody what the PS3 can do!". I'm saying "Well, its good, but its not all as real as you think, and if anything it just shows how bad the PS3 is at texture memory managment".

One last thing... That level took up 2gig. I dunno what they were smoking, but no. Not a chance in hell. And if it did? well, thats VERY poor. Either we are only gonna be getting 10 levels, or thats pretty much the extent of the texture theme right there...

Jesus, i have to stop reading odium's posts when they're that long. 9 times out of 10 he just goes off on some sort of sleep inducing graphics related rant... Sure, 1 time out of those 10 he makes a fool of himself and there's fun to be had, but damnit, it's not worth it.

Yeah, I could comment on one of your seven chins, or the fact you work on total trash games, or the fact that even when you think of all the ugly people that post on this board, you are by far the best Louie Anderson lookalike we have.

Instead, I'll just comment on how fat you are for now. Its easier.
