Can someone tell me if I have a dynamic or static ip? I'm with virgin media and use a cable modem and a broadcom integrated network controller. I thought I had dynamic but if I disconnect my cable modem from the coaxial cable connection and then reconnect, it gives me another ip number beginning with 192, and when the connection has been properly re-established, it resorts to the original ip I had before disconnecting. My TCP/IP properties radio button is set to 'Obtain an IP address automatically', and IP settings says 'DHCP Enabled '. Doing a command prompt of 'ipconfig/all', it gives me this info. My MAC address, the IP address ( same as IP before disconnecting ), subnet mask address, default gateway address, DHCP server, DNS server, and the lease obtained and lease expiry dates which are 23rd august to the 30th august. Doesn't DHCP signify dynamic IP?

192.xxx.xxx.xxx is what your controller is giving you. if you have no other nodes on the network, you're gonna get the same one every time.

your dynamic IP with your ISP is going to be your WAN IP, although i had dynamic IP with cox cable for 5 years and it only changed on me 3 times.

This might be a bit complex to explain. PM me the output of the IPConfig command and I'll have a better idea.

Basically, the IP your cable modem/router uses to access the internet and the IP your PC uses on your home network to access the cable modem/router are two separate things.

IP Addresses beginning with either:
192.168.
10.
172.16.

...are all 'local only' IP addresses that flat out won't transmit across the Internet.

The IP you need to be dynamic or static is your internet IP. It'll be in a different range to the ones above.

The fastest way to find what your IP is is to go to whatismyip.com

The easiest way to find out if it's dynamic or not is observe the resulting IP you get from that site across a few days and a few disconnections of your cable modem, and see if it changes.

It is highly likely that you have a dynamic IP unless you explicitly ordered a static one as part of your ISP package, and only a few ISPs even offer it to home customers as an option.

Cheers for the info. I'm using comodo firewall ( excellent free firewall btw ) and it tells me my ip, subnet mask, about my network adaptor and MAC address, much the same as the ipconfig info. The ip on whatismyip.com is showing the identical number. Foo, I've posted the relevant ipconfig info here. What's that lease business about? It's a fixed ip for those 8 days or something?

Yep, that sounds exactly right. Looks like your cable provider dishes out IPs via DHCP and leases for about 1 week at a time, after which point you will probably get a different IP.

Your ISP may offer the option of having your IP fixed, or it may actually already be fixed. This is done by associating the MAC address of your cable modem with an IP on the DHCP server, so it reserves and always assigns your modem that particular IP when the lease is renewed.

Best way to check would be to trawl the ISP help pages and if there's nothing there, ring their support line.

Tbh, I only hoped the ip would be dynamic instantly rather than weekly just so I could get around the download limit wait time on rapidshare. I also tried SMAC today (not heroine) but a MAC changing program which spoofs the MAC address. It changed it but it didn't allow me to connect to the net (got a limited connectivity message) so I had to remove the new MAC address.

Like Foo said, your WAN IP (or internet IP) can be checked with http://www.whatismyip.com if you disconnect your modem and restart again and you have the same IP that means that you either have static (fixed) WAN IP or the DHCP server which assigns you the IP address saves your modem's MAC(hardware address) address in it's MAC table so it will assign the same ip to your modem every time.

You should be able to spoof your mac and get a new IP. Make sure you power down your modem for a minute or so after you spoof it. My linksys router even has a mac clone option. Works for me.

Well when I tried using the MAC spoofer, it did change the MAC address but I couldn't connect to the net anymore. Not sure if it changed the IP or not. I'm not sure if I have a router, I have a cable modem which then connects into my pc via an ethernet lead. Is that the same as a router? *ignorant*
However, I didn't power down my modem after the spoof so I can try that. I've since paid for a months subscription to rapidshare anyway But it'll be good to get the spoof working for when it expires.
