Vista 64/MSI P6N/4Gb RAM issue

This is a tricky one...
Just bought an MSI P6N Diamond mainboard and 4 x Corsair 1Gb sticks + Vista x64
If I insert anything up to 3Gb of RAM the system is fine.
As soon as I go for all 4 sticks vista bluescreens on boot and the whole shebang becomes totally unstable and unusable. I think I managed to get into safe mode but that doesn't get me anywhere near fixing the issue.
I've tried all possible setups with the ram and so it's not a faulty stick.
I've manually set the RAM timings to 4-4-4-12-2T at 2.10v as specified on corsair's forums and the sticks themselves.
So I'm kinda left with the belief that either this motherboard can't take 4GB across 4 sticks, or vista has an issue with 4Gb.
The mobo's BIOS update procedure is patently ridiculous so kinda not an option... and returning the board looks like my only option but if I go for another model of board I'm going to run into trouble with a lack of sata headers and stuff ;(
Any ideas?
