Just a question for thought that I had. How long would it take for the amount of power of putting a laptop in sleep mode equal shutting it down and resarting it? Not really expecting an answer, just any thoughts or ballparks on the question.

i'm not sure how to even compair them to be honest.. but the worst pont for a laptop is during startup the power consumtion is through the roof.
Shutdown is not that bad, but it takes a bit of juice..
No sure about sleep man... Btw, what Triggered this?

Well I had to run to class and I was low on juice, I haven't been charging my laptop as much since I finally got my desktop down here, and I booted it, put it in sleep mode and then unpluged it. I knew that would help save the battery the most, and I was just curious as to how long it would take for sleeping and shutting down and starting to be equal.

I believe sleep mode sends just enough juice to retain the volatile memory in RAM. Your laptop may be configured to go into hibernation after a short period in sleep mode without an AC source. Hibernation saves the current state of things as you left them, on to HDD, and then turns off the machine.
