.mp3 to .m4a.... last question for now guys ;)

I downloaded a program called MediaMonkey in order to clear off/add songs onto an ipod. So far, the cleared off part has worked, so it seems....
I realize that tracks ripped off a cd/downloaded are .mp3 files... and all of the files on the ipod are .m4a (which I hadn't seen before, never having an ipod) So I did my rounds of research and found a program called Switch which I can use to convert .mp3s to .m4as... which I did. I had them converted to a separate temporary folder on my desktop so they would be easy to find. My problem now is... How to I get them onto my Ipod? If I use media monkey (which has a similar browse setup to explorer) it doesn't show .m4a files.
Basically I want to know it I can put ripped cd tracks onto an ipod without the use of itunes.
