New to these forums.
Joining a game of quake arena through all seeing eye i keep getting kicked with the message... server disconnected. punkbuster kicked player.
Just before this happens, in the console it says.... pb client in distress. cannot authenticate with pb server. ( A1353 ).
Do i have to install punkbuster manually or is it done automatically.

first ensure u're using the latest point release of quake3 (1.32)

then go to http://www.evenbalance.com and download the three necessary pb files and place them in the correct folder (instructions are there).

let us know what happens

all WAS going well....message now says punkbuster needs to be installed and switched on to play on server...even though it is..............HELP

try entering \pb_cl_enable in the console just before connecting to the server.

When i connect through the in-game servers it wont let me enable punkbuster.

Connect through all seeing eye and the message is...punkbuster anti cheat software must be installed and enabled in order to join the server.
Open console and type /pb_cl_enable When i do this the above message just keeps scrolling in the console.

Have done the port forwarding on router. Just the one question about that though, the lan address to send everything to, is it the address of the router that you type in or the address of PC that is connected to router.

I also play Enemy territory and i have'nt had to do anything to that. It plays perfectly.

need to have that line appended to your cfg I think.

load up quake by itself, and in the console, enter \pb_cl_enable

then quit quake, and try connecting through ASE

If that doesn't work, manually open up the relevant cfg file with notepad, and add the line \pb_cl_enable. If you're playing a certain mod, the file will be q3config.cfg within that mod directory. Else it'll be the q3config.cfg within the baseq3 directory.

Not sure about the ports issue.

I have "seta cl_punkbuster 1" in config file.
However when i start quake ( not through all seeing eye ), go to multiplayer it says punkbuster is disabled. It wont let me enable it. Exit quake and open up config file and the "seta cl_punkbuster 1" has changed to "0".
Something has turned it off.......

Have also tried the "\pb_cl_enable" in console and it does'nt turn it on.....

pb_cl_enable should say something when you enter it in. Even if it's 'not recognised'.

cl_punkbuster isn't user-modifiable and I'm confused as to what you've been told about using this... none of us mentioned cl_punkbuster.

cl_punkbuster with either a 1 or 0 after it enables or disables punkbuster.

Typing \pb_cl_enable in console does not bring anything up at all.

have u disabled any services in windows (like PnkbstrA.exe or PnkbstrB.exe) ?

and are you sure you downloaded all three files to the proper directories from evenbalance? Do you have a pb folder in your quake 3 directory?

the pbsec.htm file goes into that directory, and the two win32 client files go into the pb\htm directory (you don't need admin or server files)

xeno....where would i find the files you mention?

Am running windows ME. I know its old. The thing is i have had quake3 running fine about a year ago, even with punkbuster, so i cant understand why it dose'nt work now. The only thing that has changed is the modem/router. But i can play the game with punkbuster disabled and its fine.

The three files that are downloaded are as follows...

Filename: pbsec.htm
Filename: wc002015.htm
Filename: wa001353.htm

Have also ran the pbsetup program and if it installs the pnxbstrA/B files you say then it dose'nt put them in the pb folder.

Download and install PBSetup, which will allow you to manually update PunkBuster. It will take a few moments for it to update, be patient.

open q3, pull down the console, type

/pb_cl_enable
/pb_security "0"
/pb_sleep "500"
/pb_system "1"
/pb_writecfg

profit.

the pbsetup link you point to does not work. It downloads ok but nothing happens when it is double-clicked.

the exe file downloaded properly, and nothing happened when you ran it??

sounds like you've got deeper issues with your system that need fixing.

What OS are you running? Are you an experienced user? Is your system loaded with viruses or spyware, or just extremely childproof?

Yes i would consider myself an experienced user.
My system is not loaded with any type of spyware or viruses and is not extremely childproof.

Could i ask you to try the link to the pbsetup program and see if it works for you. Thanks.

I checked the link and the file, both worked just fine for me. Maybe try deleting or moving the file and redownloading.

yep i made sure it worked before making my last post - it went through the setup normally until i cancelled it.

I let it run the course as I haven't updated in months. No problems.

If possible you should upgrade your OS... Windows ME is trash. However I could not find any correlation with the problem you are experiencing.

Something isn't going on right here.

Can you verify you have a Quake III Arena\pb folder (with some files in it) in your Quake III Arena directory? If so, run the quake3.exe in your Quake III Arena folder, pull down the console, verify it says Q3 1.32 at the bottom right corner of the console, and type /pb_cl_enable

If you can't get PBSetup running then delete your pb folder and replace it with this one: http://filemojo.com/013478082968577/pb.zip (it is a copy of my pb folder)
