I've been a big pc dude for the last 20 years, and have avoided apple like the plague.

However, when I started grad school last september, all the computers in my lab were apple based, and vision scientists here tend to use apples for running their experiments.

So I was forced to learn and adapt.

I went in with an open mind - I realized that I was totally prejudiced, and I was completely willing to give them a fair shot.

My experiences have been horrible. The computers are horrendously slow (granted, this is because I'm using the g4 powerpc, rather than the newer intel based chipsets), but this isn't my main concern. My main concern is the fuckin piece of shit OS X - i've used panther and tiger and I think they suck ass.

I've learned the OS better than most of my labmates (although there are some PC dudes in the next lab who know how to use the unix command line for more advanced functions) and I still think it sucks ass.

The ONLY thing that I find functionally superior to XP is the f9 button - very fuckin handy I must say.

Let me break it down:

1) The bloody maximize button doesn't fully maximize the screen, which I really need. Not all of us have huge displays where partial maximization is sufficient. Besides, some of us like to focus on one particular window without being reminded of the background clutter. When I'm reading a pdf article I want to be immersed in it with a single click of a button. Instead, I have to tediously drag the corners of the window until it approximates a full screen. fucking bullshit.

2) The built in file navigator just blows. Can't sort documents by file type, but rather by file kind, which is too broad of a category for most use.

3) In XP, you can select multiple contiguous groupings of files by nifty use of the shift and ctrl key. In mac you can only select a single grouping. Fucking bullshit.

4) The systems preferences is a goddamn joke - fisher price tweaks and that's it.

The lab next door is gonna donate me a pc, now all i have to do is convince my supervisor to let me. But I suspect it isn't gonna be easy - most mac users are fanatics and cultish. He wouldn't want a pc to poison the lab

which is the right button then? And the critiques I've put forward have nothing to do with style of "driving" - they are objective critiques of functional disadvantages.

Complaining about G4 powermacs being old and slow is a bit redundant; after all, PCs at the same time were at a massive 1Ghz, and Voodoo had only just gone out of business.....

Jesus Jules, I use both extensively and for every Mac quirk I find, I can find a Windows quirk. Stop whining...

I'm using a mighty mouse and it has a right-click (touch sensitive).

It has its strengths and it certainly has its eccentricities, but then again, so does Windows. Start to shutdown? And file sharing over the network can be a lot less painful.

I'm also using Ubuntu Linux and the interface is pretty nice... too bad it's a pain in the ass to fix when something goes wrong, but when it works, it works.

I can only offer 2 pieces of advice:

1. search, sort and replace are worthless pieces of time-wasting shit on any front end gui, be it windows, X or OSX. Take a few minutes to research 5 simple commandline utilities find, locate, grep, sed (mac people--is this os-x compatible?) and pipe (|) to wc, they will free your mind of the restrictive graphical search archetypes.

2. take a few minutes to really delve into a few articles that divulge the intricacies of the system.

being able to maximize windows is not a small thing at all - it touches upon one of the most fundamental ways in which I visually interact with information.

Sorting by file type is also extremely important when you have directories loaded with different file types - images, pdfs, programming files, etc. and want to move them efficiently.

I don't want to have to learn commandlines to be able to do this - finder is a severely flawed aspect of os X. Don't deny this.

send me some of these articles - thus far, I haven't found a single thing (other than f9) which is superior to xp. I want to learn so that I can take advantage of it.

If you call this logic, and then follow it, you arrive at the conclusion that there should be no GUI at all.

Well, the mouse sensitivity on the mac is much lower than on the pc out of the box for one thing.. I had to install a different mouse driver on OS X to get it up to the point where I thought it was like the PC. Explorer is a piece of shit on Windows, Finder is only marginally better. "Accurate color" on Windows is a misnomer. Apple has a powerful built-in display profiling utility.

Lets put it this way: The quirks in one OS are derived from the perceived lack of quirks in another OS. The only ways to overcome them are either to stop thinking about them or get used to them.

If you haven't figured out how to do this in the Finder, you're not trying very hard..

Oh and by the way jules.. Since you're a grad student, I thought you'd like to know I have a whole army of grad student's I have this debate with on a daily basis.

The leopard finder is pretty nice...

Why is explorer a POS in Windows? I don't understand that one.
