Question about getting into Quake

I've been playing Quake III clones - Nexuiz, OpenArena, Warsow, Padman - for a while now, but I'd like to play the 'real' one, so to speak. But I have a few doubts, some of which might sound really stupid to you guys I'm sure. First, do I need to get a sealed copy of the game, or will a used copy do? The reason I ask is because I don't want to buy a used version and find out the cd-key has been used already by the previous owner. Second, are there a lot of servers out there to play on and people to play with? I hear stuff like 3000 servers up and running, but are any of those in America? It seems really unbelievable for a game that's 8 (?) years old. Anyway, any help would be great.

Greetings, and welcome to the forums!

If you want to play Quake3, which I highly suggest ;) , you should by the Quake Collection from steampowered.com.

http://steampowered.com/v/index.php?are ... =434&cc=NL

For a reasonable price of 30 bucks, you get all of the quake games, which is always a good plus (Quake1 and Quake2 are still being played, and there are graphical overhaul mods out there to make them look awesome). And there wont be any CD-Key issues either.

About the servers, when using the in game browser, it sees around 1700 servers. I haven't been able to tell how much players play the game in the evening, but the community is still active today.

Some of the better mods that is played is http://www.promode.org/). It is Quake 3 with competitive features and a better physics engine. I recommend to read the stickies on this forum and the FAQ on the main site.

I bought my Quake Collection last Sunday, and I am having a blast online! Sure, I get owned and ass raped at every turn, but I improve everyday. Most important thing to learn is how to move around in Quake.

This game is all about skills. And fun. ;)

(trial version will run fine and for as long as u want it)

I'm personally an ra3 fan, and there is a small but active community.

Strange thing that... When I Open up gamespy's stats, it says Q3A has 4000 players, but on ASE there is only ~2000. Anyway both numbers are quite high, so yeah, it is popular.
