Memory check failure

For some reason every now and then 3dsMax will cause my computer to just restart when it's been opened for a little while, minimized, and then I click on it on the task bar. That happened last night, and when I went to restart, it hung up on the memory test, at like 2115k or something. I tried resetting the cmos jumper a number of times, then left it over night and tried again this morning. No deal. Tried resetting the jumper again, same thing.

What does this usually mean? From googling it sounds as though it could be a faulty CPU.

Anything I can do?

If it is hanging on the POST memory test than your memory is most likely the problem, could also be an overheated CPU if it only does that on the reboots. I think you have the Ultimate Boot CD, try running Memtest86 or Memtest86+ for a while, see if it finds any memory errors. If you have a program (Windows based), usually from the motherboard manufacture, that shows you CPU temperature then monitor that. The only odd thing is if it only does it when 3dsMax has been open but idle, try other memory and processor intensive programs.

i agree with KOS, also check out Prime95

run that and see if your computer crashes.. and also, and by "run that" i mean for longer then 8 hours, that applys to MEMTEST as well as PRIME95. just not at the same time :)

It's hanging up in POST

AMD Athlon 2600+ 1911mhz
Memory Testing... 2800k OK

Then it freezes, nothing happens. So I'm looking at some bad RAM most likely?

Yes, you're probably looking at bad RAM. I know it seems tricky that bad memory would cause a memory test to fail... but trust me on this, years of experience have taught me how to spot the obscure hints.

yeah that's hilarious thanks for the input
i moved the RAM to another memory slot and it booted, i've had other various bios errors in the past few months, it's looking like i need to upgrade some things

thanks for the replies

Given uneplained BIOS errors and movement of RAM sticks, but inclusion of them all, yields better results, I would say your mobo may be fucked up.
