Is is considered a bad thing to frag someone while they are trying to "talk" to you or another player? What are some of the No-No's of Arena play on the net? Like, joining games suddenly. I dunno, whatever might be considered f@#ked up.

Glad you asked. It is poor etiquette to chat frag or frag anyone while they are talking. If it happens by accident, apologize. Some people will kill themselves if the chat frag could have been avoided (you hit the chatter more than once to complete the kill) to even the score. If you want to chat, go to a corner and turn your back to the play. Use key binds to banter chat phrases like "Nice Shot" or "Good Game". This will keep the game moving.
If you are joining a server that you are not a "regular" at, spectate for a while and observe the level of play. Join at the next map rotation unless invited to join mid game.
Camping is perching at one location that gives you a sight advantage and waiting for peeps to come by and picking them off. This is poor behavior and can get you kicked or banned.
Enjoy the game. Find a server with peeps that you enjoy, share your skill or will tolerate your learning curve and frag away.

Thank you. I'll remember all you've said.
BTW, how do you "spectate"?

/speconly works in CPMA or OSP, for vanilla Q3 you'll want to use /team spectator (or '/team s' for short).

Another way is the following:
Hit the "Esc" key as you would if you were going to exit
Click on "Start"
Click on "Spectate"
You can left mouse button click to follow a player. Each mouse click will bring you to a new player. To join the game then, hit "Esc" again followed by "Start" and "Join Game".
Another point: You may want to learn about custom maps. There are thousands of them. Some servers only use cutom maps rather then the stock maps that came with your game. I've been playing since the game came out and detest most of the stock maps, so I use custom maps on my server. You will need to learn to use a server browser like "Yahoo! All Seeing Eye" rather than the in-game server browser that you use to join. The ASE browser is free and gives you a complete list of active Q3 servers, their IP address and what game type and what map they are running. The lower righthand box may tell you where to get a listing of maps used on the server. You can enter a server directly from the ASE browser (Assuming you have the map) by hitting F9.
Spend some time at
http://lvlworld.com/. I believe this is the largest depository of Q3 custom maps left. The site has reviews of maps, videos of some and reviews and comments. It also the best location to download maps. It takes about 90 seconds to download and install a map. Plenty of time to grab it and join a game in progress.
Ok I can see this is never going to end. Most maps are zipped when you download them. To download a map, save it to your desktop and unzip it into the following folder assuming this is where your Q3 program has been placed:
C:\program files\Quake III Arena\baseq3
You are now ready to join a server playing this map in its rotation.
My server address is: 66.55.131.139:27960
To join, enter the game.
Hit "~"
type: /connect 66.55.131.139
and you will be "transferred". I run a mod called beryllium but you don't need to do anything or D/L anything. I can get a map listing to you later of the customs I run.
Sorry if I told you way more than you needed to know.

Thank you, Unisaw. I definately appreciate the tips. Soon as I get my Q3 in order, I'll stop by.
I like Arena very much, but I get smoked playin in alot of the maps I jump into. I'll get better, and I appreciate everyone who gives us less skilled fellas a hand.

How long have you been playing Quake 3 Arena?
I'm asking, because if you're new to this Q3A online universe, you can find all kind of people. These guys who replied to your first question, they replied and told their own good experiences, but it's not always like that. When you go online, you'll probably find people who don't give a damn about etiquette. If you get to find them, just leave and find another server.
I'm saying this because you'll probably find a lot of idiots online. Don't let them turn you down, if you stumble upon them, just look for another server.
Happy fragging, and welcome to the Q3A universe.
Any other question you've got, just drop by here and post it.

Ahhh helpful thread for me as well. Thanks guys!
Are there any common servers for people like me who haven't played a lot (at all) online? Or is it just as Unisaw explained?

You could start out on vanilla Q3 servers, things are more laid back there. The hardcore crowd is usually drawn to the OSP and CPMA servers.
