Oh I'm not saying he didn't do it, I'm just pointing out that every moron and his brother's acting that was the only reason the Pats ever won a game. Every team in the NFL does shit like that, I'd almost guarantee it, the Pats just got caught.

It's a good thing they didn't go 19-0, because they would have had a BIG CHEATING * next to their record.

Well, I've never said they weren't a great team. But it sure is an ugly mark. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth for Bellechick, who I already didn't care for.

I'd take a different spin on that - I know there are many morons are getting on the 'they only won because they cheated' bandwagon (which is a completely ridiculous idea), but I also think there is a bandwagon that Pats fans have created with the 'everyone else is doing it too' argument. I like to believe there are some coaches who simply wouldn't do that because they have more integrity than that. Belichick has shown himself to be a genuine prick and I think his attitudes and methodologies (specifically the ones that fall outside the rules) might not be the norm in football. Definitely not saying he is the only coach that has done it, but my own gut feeling is that spying is not standard operating procedure for almost all the teams - if it was, I wonder if Mangini would have brought it up in the first place because it could cost him the ability to keep doing it with his own team...although there is definitely a case to be made for the fact that he just wanted to stick it to Belichick. Maybe the Spectre/Goodell meetings will shed more light on this and how widespread it is in the NFL. Who knows? All I can do is guess.

Maybe spying in that particular manner isn't the norm, but come ON! Every team in the NFL is looking for every competitive advantage they can get, whether it comes from videotape, lip readers, shotgun mikes, whatever. Maybe they don't all do it, but many do, and let me be clear here they're ALL unethical to say the least.
The Pats did it, got caught, and paid a hefty fine. No bandwagoning here. I just think it's a non-issue that's been elevated to a rallying cry for all the idiots that hate the Pats simply because they've done so incredibly well and their team hasn't. Everybody hates the guy on top, Dolphins, Cowboys, Steelers, Pats, whoever.
And I think it's patently fucking absurd for a US senator to be wasting even a second on matters this trivial when we have the worst president in history in office, during a war, with the economy tanking.

They got caught cheating in the first half of the first game of the season. After which, they ceased any spying activities. Why exactly would their season record require an asterix? And they still hold a record of 18-1... is that exempt by your standards?

I didn't say you were bandwagoning - its just a cry I heard rising quickly from pats fans shortly after all this broke.

I agree with you completely about people that know fuckall about football using this as a weak excuse to explain away the pats dominance - with or without spying they are still the most talent filled team over the past several years no doubt.

I don't make the rules. They cheated and got caught, that's why. No further explanation needed.

BTW, I never said they weren't a great team.

Never said you didn't.

I'm just trying to understand your point of view. Do you think their record of 18-1 should have an asterix beside it?
Would it be more accurate to claim the team went 17-1 with one win due to cheating?

Would be and should be are two different forms of reality.

PHOENIX (AP) -- Spygate won't go away.

Roger Goodell defended his decision to destroy notes and videotapes linked to the New England Patriots' cheating scandal Friday, a day after Sen. Arlen Specter asked why the NFL commissioner trashed the evidence.

"The action that we took was decisive and it was unprecedented," Goodell said during his State of the NFL address, an annual news conference at the Super Bowl.

"I believe it was helpful in making sure our instructions were followed closely by not only the Patriots, but also by every other team. I think it was the appropriate thing to do. Our discipline sent a loud message ..."

Specter, R-Pa., said Goodell's explanation, "didn't make any sense at all."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the clincher. If Goodell can't come up with a reasonable explanation as to why he destroyed the evidence, it actually won't matter whether or not the Pats gained some advantage....the impression of shady favoritism will linger and the off season will be one fucked up train ride for the Pats and NFL as a whole. And if Matt Walsh offers anything credible, jesus things will get downright nasty.
