anytime I try to start a multiplayer game (if it's an Internet game), Quake3 automatically shuts down and boots me out, back to my desktop.
I usually go through the menu to do this.
We play at work sometimes, and I can do a local game just fine. But, I have to start it using the console because I can't change it with the menus. It's stuck on Internet there, and the moment I try to access that menu, it shuts down.

Any thoughts on what the problem is, and how to fix it?

BTW, I'm on a Mac, 10.5.1, 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

I installed the 1.32 point release (which put Quake3 10.2 G4, Quake3 10.2 and Quake3 10.1 apps in my Quake folder) and it's still not working correctly.

And this happens when I try it at work and at home.

Can you join an internet game that is already running?

is there a way to try that with console commands? I only get a split second on the multiplayer menu screen now before it shuts down because it's set to "Internet".

Ah. Try setting Q3 to run in a window before you go to the multiplayer window.

If you can go to the multiplayer menu when you're running in a window, let us know.

If I try to start a single player game now... just as the match starts, the game totally shuts down and sends me back to my desktop.
If I try to start a local multiplayer match, the same thing happens. Just as the match starts, it quits.

Sounds a bit terminal.

Does it leave anything running when it crashes or does it completely close without any kind of error?

Also I forgot to ask, what operating system are you using?

thanks for that. I didn't even think about MacRumors. I'll give a try tonight and see how it goes.

ok, I pulled the old Quake stuff off my computer onto an external drive, installed the 1.32 point release, then copied over the pak0.pks from the installation disk. So all the application stuff should be new. I can get it to run a single player game now, but I still can't get on Multiplayer > Internet.

I have an old preference file lurking someplace though, because my old player name and model are still showing up. I'm going to try and find that and delete it.

Is there a console command to get to the internet games list screen? Wonder if it's just something buggy with the menu.

It's shutting you down as soon as it touches your internet connection. Hence why it's worth trying to run it in a window... if there's a firewall prompt or such coming up that's messing with the fullscreen video, that would show it.

how do I try running it in a window?

load game, at console enter \r_fullscreen 0 then \vid_restart

Or there's an option on the graphics settings in the menus if you can get that far.

Or press alt + enter(return) to toggle between fullscreen and window mode. Note this is in Windows and I don't know the shortcut for Mac if any.

well.... I ran it in a window and didn't see any alerts pop up on the desktop. It just quits. It has to be that preferences file, maybe it's corrupted. I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I can access all the other menus and options, just not the Internet. I could maybe understand it doing it at work, with the firewall. But I'm not sure why it'd be happening at home too.

Try searching on the internet for anything that could be related to your issue is all I can suggest.

Well, I don't get it. I can get online and play just fine with Urban Terror and Unreal Tournament. Just not Q3, which is what I'd rather be playing!!!!

try starting the game, bring down the console ( ~ button ) and type this
/connect 216.12.96.42:27960

that worked great. it logged right in! so... what does that mean?

There might be a bug in the multiplayer server browser code

is there a way to "debug" it? (I really have no idea what I'm talking about) but, a way to find the problem and fix it? now that know I can play online.... I'm really jonesin' for some Deathmatch!!!!
