Format wars are over, HD-DVD's history

Toshiba will stop supporting HD-DVD h/w. This is from an email I received from a friend and former coworker at the optics manufacturer I left a while back.
As many of you may have already heard, it looks like the fully industry
adoption of blu-ray is imminent. Today it was leaked by a reporter
who is certainly ranked in the top three with respect to industry
contacts
that Toshiba will stop supporting HD-DVD hardware. Since they
are the only real manufacturer, that is it for the format. It has been
confirmed by all the significant insiders that the announcement
was to be an official one in a couple of weeks, so I don't know what
impact this leak will have. Also, Walmart just announce that they are
going blu-ray exclusive by summer. With the announcements of
Best Buy and Netflix this last weeks, this doesn't leave a significant
retailer who will not be blu-ray exclusive by Fall.

Well maybe I can pickup up a few for $5 or something. I wasn't expecting it to be over this soon. I thought I'd get 6 months to year out of my $100 player. Oh well...

Nah, join the club. I don't really watch TV and DVD looks good enough for me, but I only watch movies on the computer anyway.

I'm currently trying to decide if I'm going to shell the money out for a digital-analog converter box for the old 20" tv I have.

if a bluray rom comes out, it might almost be worth sinking serious money into a big fuck-off monitor, like one of these bad boys

I give a partial shit about HD...I like it for sports and whatnot, and don't see myself being able to go back after having it for so long, but as for DVDs, I don't give a shit. Standard def on the widescreen looks plenty good enough for me.

The only reason I'm interested in Blu-ray or other HD media is the storage capabilities. I'll probably get an HD tv at some point, but no hurry.
