burning dvd

I bought a movie and want to make a copy to protect the original. The movie is 6.78 GB though and the DVD holds 4.5GB or somethign.

I generally use Nero for burning CDs, so if I try to copy this will it say there is not enough space on the blank or will it just know what to do? Or should I get a different program?

Hint: buy yourself a higher capacity DVD.

You can reduce the quality to fit it in, using DVD Shrink or something

The movie is on one side of the dvd only.

I thought the only way to exceed 5GB was to have a dual sided dvd/burner.

Are there DVDs that exceed 5Gb on one side?

Get yourself a dual-layer DVD writer and some discs. They have a 8.5GB capacity. They only have one side and I think that's what you're confused about.

Dual-layer != two sided

confused?..yes.

You say they only have one side, but then you say dual-layer = two sides.

And you say to get dual layer. But the movie is one sided?????????????? Do they have special software to write 6, 7GB on one side/

!= means "does not equal". As in "Dual-layer DOES NOT EQUAL two sides"

Dual layer DVD's are not 2 sided.

Dual layer recording
A Dual Layer disc differs from its usual DVD counterpart by employing a second physical layer within the disc itself. The drive with Dual Layer capability accesses the second layer by shining the laser through the first semi-transparent layer. The layer change mechanism in some DVD players can show a noticeable pause, as long as two seconds by some accounts. This caused more than a few viewers to worry that their dual layer discs were damaged or defective, with the end result that studios began listing a standard message explaining the dual layer pausing effect on all dual layer disc packaging.

DVD recordable discs supporting this technology are backward compatible with some existing DVD players and DVD-ROM drives.[10] Many current DVD recorders support dual-layer technology, and the price is now comparable to that of single-layer drives, though the blank media remains more expensive. The recording speeds reached by dual-layer media are still well below those of single-layer media.
