Well its the sequel to the first movie they made so I would have to assume its picking up after that whole alien spaceship thing.

Here's my synopsis of the X-Files....

Season 1-4:

Mulder: All the evidence is right in front of your face. Didn't you see the aliens and spaceships and all that?
Scully: I don't know what I saw, Mulder

Season 5-End:

Scully: All the evidence is right in front of your face. Didn't you see the aliens and spaceships and all that?
Mulder: I don't know what I saw and I don't believe it anymore

The movie:

Mulder: All the evidence is right in front of your face. Didn't you see the aliens and spaceships and all that?
Scully: I don't know what I saw, Mulder

Well its a good job the movies not about aliens then and its more about the random monsters that the series was best known for.
