can't load open gl subsystem

Post by ram1009 »

I have played Quake 111 nearly every day since I first bough it in 1999. Today I changed monitors to a 28" Viewsonic LCD. Now whenever I try to start the game I get the message "can't load open gl subsystem". Any ideas? Running WXP Pro & 8800GTS with 2GB of ram & Core Two Duo. Asus mb.

Goodness, 28"!

Try resetting your .cfg files.

"Can't load OpenGL subsystem" usually means there aren't proper drivers for your video card installed. In your case, seeing you swapped monitors, I suspect XP messed something up. Uninstall the drivers for both your video card and your monitor, then reinstall them.

It's actually a r_mode issue, it's in most cases set to a setting your monitor can't render. Open your q3config.cfg with Notepad and edit the r_mode setting to 4. That should solve your problem.

I just loaded CoD and I'm getting this same error.

^misantropia^, how do I do that? You know, uninst/reinst the drivers?

So...Q2 doesn't use OpenGL?

Onboard video. hmm. Does that mean if I get a graphics card, I'll be able to play these games on the comp in question?

you're trying to play Call of Duty with an onboard graphics chip? i'm not sure if that's possible. obviously your chip supports it if you can play Q2, but CoD is probably just too much for it.

yes, you can play CoD with a new card, but how old is it? do you have pci-e slots or just vga?

Three pci slots. (white, lower left as you look at the board)

PCI-e is different than PCI.

The top white slot is pci-e x16, the three on bottom are pci, the two short ones are pc-e x1

the brown one on top is AGP

You don't have either the AGP or PCI-e slots?

Oh and Q2 has a non-OpenGl mode. So, yeah, you can play Q2 without OpenGL.

No sir, I do not. I got this comp for free a while ago, and I just now decided to see what it could do. Do you think it will support a graphics card? The lower two slots are being used for LAN and phone cable hookups.

Oh. I see what you mean. The card goes into the pci-e slot, right? I don't mean to sound obtuse, but I really don't have any experiance with this sorta thing. I have another motherboard, but I wouldn't know how to change it.

That board is pretty old then. You can still get pci cards. Here is a list of some.

Yeah, but if you don't have one of those slots you'll have to go with either a pci card or change out your motherboard. Which could lead to another processor, power supply, ram, and maybe more. Hard to say without knowing exactly what you have on hand.

Excellent. Thank you. If I post a pic of the two other boards I have, do you think you could tell me anything about them? Or, if you let me know where on the boards are the pertinate info, I could just look. One of the boards, I used to play Quake3 on, but I put the HD in another comp. When I returned it, the comp could no longer read the monitor. I tried a different HD with different WindowsXP, but that comp still wouldn't read the monitor.

The important info is usually the bigger print on the board. For example the ABIT BE6-II on the second pic.

:olo: No. That one, I ended up loading a bunch of card games on and gave it to this alcoholic I know. He thinks it's the greatest thing since rye whisky. As long as he's enjoying it, it's all good. :)

I'm not finding much on either of those. Other than the BXtoo is pretty old. Is there any other kind of identifying info on the other one? Maybe a pic would help.
