ExternalDrive

So I recently got a WD MyBook 750GB external hard drive, and it has been fun, been backing things up, expanding my music collection, all sorts of fun things. The only annoying thing is that if I just leave it plugged in when I shut my computer down it turns off (this is a nice feature) and when I turn my computer back on it comes back to life and lights up, but then Windows won't boot. It will be at the Windows XP boot screen with the scrolling bar and the XP logo for a few minutes and then I unplug it and restart. Why won't Windows boot normally with this drive plugged in? I use Firewire instead of USB btw, if that matters.

make sure that firewire boot is not enabled in the BIOS. i don't have firewire, buti 'm assuming you can do that just like USB.

It gets to the Windows boot, it is in the main Windows boot process, but it doesn't continue, it just perpetually loads.

Does your firewire drive have its own dedicated power supply or is it powered entirely from the firewire?

If it's powered solely from firewire, then that's the source of the issue. You need to either find and connect a dedicated power supply for the drive if it supports it, or you're stuck with keeping the drive unplugged while you boot.

It has its own power supply, and it is plugged in.

Haven't really tried it with USB TBH, I may try that later. I really do perfer using Firewire for external drives, but I will try that later like I said. I turned off boot other devices in my BIOS and it seemed to work, for a while. I think when I shut my computer down and the drive turns off too that it can fuck with Windows when it turns on when the comptuer boots, but a simple restart or something it doesn't fuck up leaving the drive connected.

I just noticed that it is FAT32, probably so it would be instantly workable with Mac and Windows, but I'm not a huge fan of FAT32 (especially with 750 GB) so I am going to reformat it.
