360 hunting

So I'd like to snag a 360 but the reliability of the damn things has kept me from doing so. So I hear the Falcon boards are the best bet for keeping it around for more than a year or so. So how do i know things like manufacture date, which board the system has, etc.?

i bought mine in october of 2006, havn't had a single problem. The reliability issues are only with the launch console, they're not even retailed anymore

Wrong. The halo and elite still suffer from the lifting problem. But thanks to a new heat sync and 8 spots of glue it's not as often.

The Halo unit has the new cooler running CPU, the elite and classic still have the normal CPU. All have the new DVD ROM drives and heat sync fixes (with glue).

All new production 360s have a HDMI port.

Been running an arcade version for about six months or so. We just bought the Nyko Intercooler to help cool it off. It's noisy, but I'm sure it helps.

I'm on my 3rd replacement so far, if you get one, get the extended warranty from the store you buy it at. That way, you won't have to wait 3 months to get your replacement. That's what I did anyway, sure you do have to pay a bit more but it's well worth the price, beleive me.

This new console however has been doing well so far.

There's another one to watch out for with Elites too; the HDMI is prone to fucking up. Mate at work has had his go, and the screen went all funny. When he looked it up, apparently it's quite common.

Mine just wont seem to kick the bucket. I've been waiting for it to die so I can get a new one, but the damn thing just won't give up. Hmmm, maybe if I shove some hard candy down in there...

A lot of places don't offer warranties on 360s anymore thanks to how prone they are to fucking up. :(

I'm on my 3rd. One thing about what Kracus said about the extended store warranties being a lot better than MS -

I got one of those from Circuit City for my 2nd 360. It was anything but an instant replacement when it died. I had to sent it in to them and then they sent me a gift card. Was really pissed off about this because they told me it would be an instant return thing. The turnaround on the one I sent to MS was not much longer.

Not sure what the policy is like for other big box stores.

Yeah I got mine at EB games, they're real decent about it here. On my first console I had actualy forgotten to buy the extended warranty and the guy took it back anyway and swapped it as long as I bought and extended warranty on the new console he was giving me as a replacement, which also failed at a later date.

Either way, console woes are likely to happen with a 360, don't take chances buying it used unless you're paying 100$ or less for it. And if it's new, make sure the ext warranty will let you swap it right from the store with no hassles I guess.

I know EB doesn't do it anymore. I replaced my system there using the replacement plan I got with it, and they wouldn't let me get a new warranty.
