This URLU shit ain't workin anymore

Body bumped from flight to make way for luggage
"You just don't bump a loved one in Montreal and keep him there for a whole night and say, 'They can wait,'" she said.

Air Canada is not commenting on the incident, but an official said the airline is investigating what went wrong.
And...more slaughter on the west coast (wtf is wrong with that place):

3 kids killed...all under 10 years old

And another link to the story

I'll go ahead and clarify what I mean by "American influence" for the retards here who still have their eyes closed.

The American influence means:

- Sense of entitlement (the phrase "The customer is always right" is said as often in Canada as the US). You should see Canadians while their vacationing in other countries...it's embarrassing.
- A trend towards right-wing policies
- Erosion of civil liberties for its citizens (Canada does indeed follow the US lead on this and imposes new laws right after the Americans impose them)
- A mostly worthless mass media that literally echoes what is on American news. This includes MASSIVELY biased reporting regarding the Israel/Palestinian conflict.
- Buying shitty American cars as a form of "patriotism" (Alot of American and Japanese cars are made in Canada...then shipped to the US and sold back to Canadians at inflated prices)
- Embarrassing consumption (I think Canada is the worst offender in this...IIRC)
- Building boxes and calling them "Architecture". Canada is full of boxes (The theme from Weeds is appropriate in describing this). Take a look at a typical street in Canada/US and then take a look at a town street from an old western...nothing has changed in layout or appearance.
- "Valley Girl" speak
- The success of reality TV.
- The success of country music.
- Prevalence of mullets. (see country music)
- Prevalence of pickup trucks (see country music)
- Shameless...oh so fucking shameless consumerism (have you seen Canadian television commercials for products? Oh-my-god. I'm so glad I got away from that crap for six years.)
- And worst of all, increasing apathy and dumbness to the world around them (see my first point).
- And even more worstest of all, Canadians thinking that tossing their country away and becoming the 51st US state "wouldn't bother them".

In other words...becoming more like Americans every.single.fucking.day.

Every one of these points has influenced what Canada has become over the course of the last 500 years and I'd say most of it is due to proximity and high trade. Europe is just as consumer-driven as North America but they don't have the same attitudes as North Americans in the areas I've listed...not even close.

The REALLY sad fact about pickup trucks in Canada (especially on the prairies) is that EVERYONE is driving a pickup truck....and..even sadder...is that there are hundreds of pickup trucks driving the streets and EVERY FUCKING ONE OF THEM only has one person in it.

1,000,000,000,000 tonnes of large-engined steel transporting people to the store to get cigarettes. :dork:
Too many Canadians would rather cut off their arm than ride a bike to the store.

There have actually been DEBATES about this in Canada: the various media, in Parliament/Legislatures and at people's dinner tables.

It's the main thing the neocons got wrong from the start: The American way isn't the best and shouldn't lead the world.

I guess you missed them 20 years ago.

I'm not sure how entirely serious it all was but the media at the time brought it up on several occasions like it was serious enough to talk about. Several MPs were interviewed about it but that doesn't mean they were actively endorsing it or trying to make it happen. The media touched upon it again about 4 years ago (at least the local media in Winnipeg). And we all know the media doesn't hype shit. :smirk:

you're in montreal right?

even though most of the canadian population lives in the few cities we have, canada is still rural at heart. those of us who make up the massive gaps between cities will make sure we'll always be canadians.

edit: yeah i'm old enough to remember the "few" people who talked about it. that's all it was. a few crackpots flapping off at the lips.

I'm sure every Canadian at heart wants to stay Canadian.

Most of the discussion was on the practicalities of becoming part of the US in terms of "no-border" and cheaper prices on some goods (namely cars and other toys).

But the dinner table discussions did indeed happen as well as the media discussing it more than they should have. >:(

Hell...I think there's a website out there made by Canadians calling for Canada to join the US.

edit: Here it is

Again...my problem isn't with the discussion of Canada joining the US, my problem is that some Canadians think we should.

you know, imo, slow careful growth is what we used to strive towards. thats what kept canada, canada. i agree we've lost our way in a sense. take a look at alberta. fucking retarded the shit that's going down out there now. it makes me ashamed we would let uncontrolled growth like that happen.

we were taught about the oilsands when i was a kid in primary school(alberta). they talked about all the oil that could never be recovered because they would have to fuck the environment up the ass HARD. now look. :(

"Keeping up with the Joneses"

A surprising amount of Euro-trash (some who post here) have said they wish their country was more like the US in terms of work ethic, productivity, etc. I immediately tell them why they're wrong. Go! Go! Go! is not always a way to go.

FFS...part of the enticement for me to take the job in Montreal was that I told A2M flatly that 2 weeks vacation is simply not enough and part of the reason I wanted to stay in Europe. They increased it to four weeks...so I took the job.
