on a roadtrip with the rents, and one damned thing was annoying as hell.
Stopping for gas, you need to pay inside, pump, and if you cant put that amount in, Walk back in for change..
When did this start? or has it allways been this way?

The bigger the town, the more likely they do it that way. It wasn't always like that, and I suppose credit cards have something to do with it.

The reason for it is people are cunts and drive off before paying. The higher gas prices boosted how often this happened so lots of gas stops started doing this.

Most of the places around here have one of the cashiers with binoculars writing down everyones plate # as they pump.

i'll be using plastic on the way back,
though, on a few stations you still need to pay inside, they disabled the pay at the pump feature...

Been this way for quite some time in the bigger cities where drive-offs have become a huge problem since the prices got so high.

As of this year all of BC is pre-pay 24/7. Some gas station employee jumped in front of a car that was driving away without paying and then got dragged to his death so people were outraged, media was involved, and now we have this law province-wide. I feel for the guy's family but ffs who jumps in front of a moving car trying to stop someone for $12 of stolen gas?!

yeah, if they aren't paying at the pump they write down the plate and then authorize the pump. Seems like a better deal then prepay..at least they are doing the extra work.

Meaning you can just pump and pay inside afterwards? Or that pay at the pump hasn't been disabled. I notice that there were two things being discussed here - my point was that at most places here you either have to pay at the pump or pay first if using cash. Not at every place, but most of the national chains that are in town.

Isn't that what his first complaint was about? When I first got my license 16 years ago I'd fill up all the time then go in and pay afterwards.

right, he's complaining about doing it and i'm saying i've never NOT had to pay first.

I'm used to it... but christ I know my car well enough to know how much gas it's going to take and not have to go inside for change

Same here. I can tell if it's going to take 30, 35 or 40 bucks to fill my tank when I pull up. I exchange a maximum of 5 words with the cashier and am out the door in under half a minute. I don't find it all that bothersome.
