That's fucked up. Here in Toronto, if someone refuses to pay the fare on a bus or streetcar, they are allowed to ride for free.

who's going to pay for that(education)? someone making $30,000 a year should pay for someone that's going to make $100,000 plus? let people pay for their own education.

the cost would be extraordinary.

Denmark pays for everything...including university.

The entire country is chock full of bright, productive people who aren't stressed out and broke trying to pay back loans.

The system can work.

there are student loans in the UK (replaced grants gradually during the 90s), but the threshold for compulsory repayment is above the average wage, and they're cancelled on retirement, and the company that issues them is wholly government-owned. if someone can afford the repayments, they make them, otherwise not. it isn't the massive burden people make it out to be

the conservatives reduced the size of grants and first introduced the loan system on the grounds that they didn't see why working class people should pay out of their taxes for middle class people to go to university. of course, the obvious response is: why not just encourage more working class people to go to university? :smirk:

Recently they had an incident in greece where uni. students basically would ride the system for free board while pretending to get an education...I'm sure it was the few than most but they could still face the possibility of a more westernized higher edu. system

It boils down to individuals willing to do the right thing to make an ideal system work

What a bargain! Free university and health care for only 68% of your income! I bet you can buy lots of stuff with that other 32%.

Of course, their citizens are leaving the country at rates that are causing a labor shortage, but that must be because they're idiots who grew tired of paradise.

I like how you left out the part where it sais 68% is for people in the highest income bracket.

Oh and you apparently read over this part from that article:
Denmark is the home of "flexicurity," the catchy name given to a system that pays ample unemployment and welfare benefits but, unusually in Europe, imposes almost no restrictions on hiring and firing by employers. The mixture has served Denmark well, and its economy barreled ahead in 2006 by 3.5 percent, one of the best performances in western Europe. The country is effectively at full employment.

you have to pick and choose your battles!

I agree with the free thing too, but I refuse to use public transportation. I used it more for the 10 days I was in Italy then the all years I've been alive.

They're not allowed to ride for free, that was put in place to protect the drivers from being assaulted. Sure they ride for free but saying that they're allowed is misleading.

And another thing that's wrong with Denmark - besides being affluent, stable and giving couples up to a whole year off for paternity leave - is that they don't have any guns.

You're a fucking idiot.

Plus your second link was a biased bit of hackeration...probably written by Rick Santorum for the American Enterprise Institute...fuckin lol.

The problem, employers and economists believe, has a lot to do with the 63 percent marginal tax rate paid by top earners in Denmark - a level that hits anyone making more than 360,000 Danish kroner, or about $70,000.
This is complete bullshit. I know this because I was making more than 360,000 kr and my tax rate was NOT in the 60% range....not even close.

Oh...and just in case you missed it...you know...the very next sentence:
That same tax rate underpins such effective income redistribution that Denmark is the most nearly equal society in the world, in that wealth is more evenly spread than anywhere else.
Yeah...I can see the problem of everyone being taken care of, making a good wage, having a nice house and a sailboat and having an excellent standard of living and opportunity could ruin a country. :olo:

Seriously...that article is a nothing more than another of the countless "Conservative American ways of doing things is best" propaganda can of shit and no doubt written by people who loathe the idea of free healthcare and designed for people from Europe to read. I'm being a prick but that article was a fucking joke.
