for me it has to be an old game called 7th Guest
i can still hear the in-game music in my head and the puzzles atmosphere were great.

and Quake1
full volume scary shit , hella fun single player and the father of all online games

co-incendently 7th-Guest was made by an ex member of id Graemme Devine who made my day emailing me once.

and the id software geniuses of the day "they never call to talk or have sleepovers"

For me that'd probably be command & conquer red alert (1) and exile: escape from the pit.

I'd probably go with Maniac Mansion and maybe FF7.

Not strictly the best, but the definitive early experiences: q1, doom, rise of the triads, fury of the furries, fuzzy's golf, return fire, heretic, c&c, theme park.

too hard to say. like foo, notable titles: ff7, silent hill 2, dune2, dungeon master, baldurs gate series, doom/ultimate doom.

im also a sucker for musical scores so games like 7th guest will always stick.

I am not sure about the second one, but I can't think of another game atm. I mainly put it for nostalgia purposes, being a game you have to play through all at once to beat, and for being on the superior sega master system. Fuck Mario and Nintendo...

EverQuest w/ Ruins of Kunark expansion. Velious and beyond was a very steep and greasy slide for EQ becoming a steaming pile of shit.

Turok for the N64
PC and Dreamcast Quake 3 Arena
Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast
Grand Turismo 1

And who could forget Goldeneye for the N64?

mmmmmmm Dune II, Red Alert, Lemmings, FFVII, Cannon Fodder. All the old classics. Not to mention Q3

I like all the zelda's and the majority of the FFs.
One of my classic favs is Legendary Wings for the NES

Ultima 6 or Ultima 7 are both close to my all time fav. 7th guest was great at the time too. the sequel, 11th hour, wasn't as good, but still a decent game with some brutally hard puzzles.

First Baldur's Gate was great.

Original Zelda, arcade punch out, super mario brothers...god there are too many to list.

If we're going to expand add FF VII, the rest of the exile series and probably lemmings and the recent Prince of Persia series.

Mariokart 64 and SSB Melee if we're going by # of hours played for a game that isn't q3. honorable mention goes to Worms Armageddon.

Quake 3 - to this day i still play it occasionally and it's still as fun as the first time i ever played it.

CoD4 - it's the only game other than Q3 that keeps me wanting to come back for more.

If I'm going by time spent playing then most likely:
1st: Q3 (TA and TA mods)
2nd: Q2 (LMCTF mod)

Best non-quake series game... dunno so many. Bard's Tale 1/2/3 for old school Apple. I loved Wipeout XL/2097 for PS1 and Burnout 3 for 360. Guild Wars was a favorite for over 2 years. Guitar Hero 2/3 provided months of fun.
2 best games is really damned near impossible to ping down.
