Do you back up files everyday and how?

I just lost everything I had on my main PC because I had to format and reinstall WXP.
My PC was on when we had a power shut down and I don't have an APC.
I know there might have been a way to debug my PC and save all my files but I lost my temper and press the format button when asked for the xxxtimes.
So, do you back up your files often and how? On another PC or on an external drive...?
Thanks for your advices.

I backup files on external drives and flash sticks. I also image with Norton Ghost every few weeks. If something weird happens, I can dump an image of my drive and be up and running in about 10 minutes.

Do you have to do it manually or can you programmed it to do it so every time you finish a session or so?

I have 3 drives in my system. One is for Windows and applications. The second is for all my data.
Every night I have a robocopy that runs, and backs up all my data from the 2nd drive to the 3rd.

I use a regular hard drive in an external enclosure through SATA with Acronis. I love Acronis. The only comparable software I have used was Drive Image, pre-norton, and I didn't like it at all.
I backup my data manually and schedule a full system backup once a week.

I've never done any backing up (unless I'm about to format) and I fear it's gonna bite me in the ass.
What's the best way to go about doing it? I've got a 250GB drive for Windows and apps and a 500GB for all my files and games.
