Quake3World

I noticed that in the Setup->System->Video mode available options, quake 3 arena supports 1152x864 (4:3 ratio), and then the next option is 1280x1024 (5:4 ratio). It is missing the 1280x960 resolution (4:3 ratio).

this is strange, because quake 3 arena natively supports the 4:3 aspect ratio, and it also offers the 1600x1200 ratio, but it doesnt offer 1280x960 which is 4:3! both 1280 and 960 are divisible by 64 so its a very comatible resolution, heck even the 1152x864 is only divisible by 32.

so why doesnt quake 3 offer the resolution of 1280x960? even Nexuiz which runs on a heavily modified quake 1 engine offers that resolution. Is there anyway to play quake 3 arena in a 1280x960 resolution?

Try setting it as a custom resolution:
In the console put:
r_customwidth 1280
r_customheight 960
r_mode -1
vid_restart

You might want to do r_customaspect 1 aswell, though I am not sure what that does cause I set custom resolutions before without setting that. You'd need to do a vid_restart after that aswell.

I found that it doesn't work for all resolutions, only ones that are supported by the Windows desktop. I don't know if it's the latest patch or XP but on Win98SE, I used to be able to set any resolution I wanted and Q3 would switch to it - if it wasn't a desktop resolution Q3 would overlay the desktop with the desktop at the nearest next biggest resolution, so I could set the desktiop background to black and it wouldn't be very noticeable. E.g. I could run 768x232-or-something (I changed the vertical from 240 or something for more FPS) and it would overlay the desktiop resolution of 800x600 (even though I had 768x576, which is 4:3, added as a custom resolution in Windows (in the registry) which worked in emulators.

I'd like to know why it doesn't work in XP with the latest patch - is it XP or the patch or what? Maybe it's r_customaspect? I'll try that later.

thank you very much for your help! i was successfuly able to change the quake 3 arena resolution to 1280x960 using that method. looks and works great. the mouse feels a little funny but there are plenty of ways to adjust that!
