3 guys rent a motel room, the Lanlord ask them for 30$ for the night.
Next morning his wife tell him ...You charged them too much, it’s 25$, so you have to give them back 5$. Her husband agree and as he went to give them back their 5$ ???
As He could not divide it for 3,...
- He kept 2$ and gave them each 1$.

Add it up

Three men each paid $10 to share a $30 hotel room. Later, the manager felt bad about overcharging them for a $25 dollar room, so he gave the bellboy 5 one-dollar bills to return to them. The bellboy returned one dollar to each of the men, but kept two for himself. So the men paid $27 for the room, plus $2 to the bellboy for a total of $29. Where did the extra dollar go?

The $2 the bellboy took isn't added to the total, it's subtracted. He took away $2 that should have been given.

So, the men did not pay $27 for the room, they paid $25. How the $5 was divided is completely seperate.

That is moronic. If you're subtracting the $3 from the $30 bill, you shouldn't add the remaining $2 back to it. That should be subtracted from the $27.
the "plus" in "plus $2 to bellboy" is not a mathematical function, but a linguistic function.

"So the men paid $27 for the room, AND $2 went to the bellboy for a final of $25."

EDIT: what transient said

It wasn't directed at you, but at the idea that pete would bother posting this. I just happened to quote you because your post was the only one that I could work with.

Thanks all.
I am usually great with figures and numbers, I also thought it was a type of a figure of speech but...
I still don't get it.

Plain and simple here Pete:

The guys paid $25 for the room, and then had $2 stolen from them by the bellboy. That's why they spent $27.

It's not a riddle, it's a linguistic trick that can't be solved if you accept the way it's framed.

You said he was going to give them back $5, right? But he kept $2, right? That means he only gave them back $3.

So they ended up paying $27 (30 - 3) for a $25 room. They are still owed the $2 the owner pocketed (27 - 25).
