I've tried a few over the past few weeks, but right now I'm using
AVS DVD player, and honestly, it's not
that bad of a player... but with each movie I watch I find something else that bugs me. I've tried a few others in the past, but very rarely watched movies on my pc due the ancient monitor I've been using. Few weeks ago I picked up a nice little widescreen lcd and have been using it like crazy and it's about to drive me mad.
Can anyone recommend a better app for watching dvds, I would prefer it be free, but I wouldn't mind spending a bit more to get this working without this many problems.
Main gripe I have is if you pause a movie using AVS for about a minute or more, you have to stop the movie, and then restart it or it's going to look like a out of sync youtube vid. That and pretty much any somewhat "new" movie I try and play normally freezes up as soon as I hit play.

WinDVD 8 is perfect IMO.

Media Player Classic can play DVDs aswell as VLC, though VLC might be better at it depending on the DVD. Both are free.
I used to have WinDVD on my old PC and it was good, but I don't have it any more. It came with the graphics card for that PC.
With this PC I got CyberLink PowerDVD which was OK at first but later it had a problem where it overlayed a window obscuring the video window. So I just use Mplayerclassic or VLC now, they work, but the seeking and volume controls could be better.
Maybe I'll look into getting WinDVD again cause I remember it being better than PowerDVD (without the bug).

I remember trying MPC some time ago, but something about it turned me off iirc. Don't think I've tried VLC though, I'll check both out next time around.

Which is bizarre since DVDs usually get played in full screen so the GUI is pointless. VLC is a great free choice.
Btw, damn you Foo. Thanks to some of your recommendations a couple years back I'm now using Firefox, Foxit, Openoffice, VLC, 7zip, etc.....you've infected me with your open-sourcedness
