HP has the MediaSmart Servers running Microsoft Home Server. I've been looking for an easy way to back up stuff from multiple computers.

I'm currently trying out Restore Backup running on Ubuntu on an old beater of a computer. It works, but the computer's loud, the software isn't exactly easy to use. I know a NAS will work as well.

Normally, I think the HP servers are a little ridiculously priced at $600 for the 500GB, but I can get one through work by ordering it from HP corporate for $200. I was wondering if anyone has any experiences working with one, any alternatives and generally wondering if it's worth it.

For the price you can get it it seems worthwhile.

Like you said though, a NAS will meet your needs. If you can get one of those cheaper as well, may as well go for it.

You may be able to get the Home Server to do a bunch of other stuff (downloads, media streaming, torrents, tv recording) that a NAS wouldn't do...

i'de be worried with that thing running a sort of embedded windows.

then all the things that foo listed ( and would make the server a little more usefull ) would be impossible.

Check to see if you can install Actuall ap's on it, i'm sure a HP rep would be able to answer that for you.
