There is a consensus in the MMA community that this man is currently the best heavyweight fighter on the planet.

Many believe he is also the greatest pound for pound fighter, though this title is in contention with Anderson Silva and GSP.

Virtually all believe him to be one of the greatest atheletes in history, and his prowess in combat is matched by his humility.

His professional MMA record is 28 wins and 1 loss, which wasn't actually a loss (legal loophole allowed it to be a recorded as a loss).

His strengths are numerous, but an important one is his comfort and mastery over virtually all elements of unarmed combat. His style is completely unique - it's something he's been consciously experimenting with and developing for many years, and watching it is truly a thing of beauty to the observant mind.


There are elements of Fedor's hand striking which have a very eastern european flavour and are strange to many western fighters. It is an affair which doesn't seem to rely at all on the contraction of the triceps, though he is capable of these sorts of punches when needed. Rather, these punches involve a more laterally generated force, having the rotational core developed from the toes, up through the legs, hips, torso and shoulders. The result is a barrage of pummeling that targets the upper body and head in a devastating fashion.


It may very well have weaknesses if used in exclusion, but Fedor used it most recently in very fucking effective fashion. He literally flies through the air, throwing his whole body into each punch.

Study this gif carefully. It may take a while to load, but it's worth the wait. It's of the opening seconds of his latest fight versus Tim Sylvia, a two time UFC heavyweight champion.

Scrutiny implies there's some flaw in his 'weapon'... doesn't seem like the right word here. Definitely an amazing stud though.

Fedor's punching is only of interest because he hits in a relaxed-arm eastern European style like many other SAMBO practitioners, including his brother, and Sergei Kharitonov to name a couple. Any good puncher hits with his entire body weight and more when he wants to.

No that's not what I meant - putting your body weight into a punch is not something unique to fedor, or eastern european styles - the link at the end of my post demonstrates a "conventional" punch using the whole body principle

What I'm talking about is the style in which he does it, and it's super effective at rapidly targetting the temporal regions of the head behind the guard. Vovchanchyn's another dude who punches similarly. It's a very well developed haymaker attack, and the way fedor flows while using it allows impressive precision and power.

Millions of people viewed it recently in a highly publicized fight which lasted 36 seconds. Fighters are going to be studying just how exactly a man like Tim Sylvia was so efficiently taken off his feet, and this highlight clip is very instructive. It's the sort of thing that might lead to more gyms emulating it.
