Ok, I've put this under some stress and the processor does OK with the stock fan, not as cool as I'd like, but good enough until I get a replacement (hits about 58 C when gaming and intel says it is ok up to 72 C). My motherboard hit 45 C and threw a warning at that temp though (I have the warnings at their defaults). What are accepted operating temps for mobos and processors while gaming you think?

Without knowing which cpu you have or which game you are playing, it's hard to say.

58c is not overly hot when playing a game like Quake which puts a lot of stress on the system.

I am running an E8400 Core 2 duo 3.0Ghz processor (45nm).

My processor also runs at 3.0GHz... except it's a Pentium 4


Those temps sound fine.

Once the CPU starts hitting 80 or 90, then the problems start.

P4's run much hotter than the new stuff, but like we said 58c is nothing

Where are motherboard temps taken at, and are they really something to worry about like processor temps are?

No, they aren't something to worry about as much as a CPU temp unless its consistently really high.

Doesn't Intel step down their CPUs if they get too hot?

But those temps are a little high, though, do you have the thermal Pad on the stock hsf? or did you take it off?

I didn't modify the stock HSF at all. The processor temp isn't too bad now, it didn't go above 52 with crysis. I can't figure out why the motheboard temp goes up to 48-49 though. No wires in the way, 120 mm fan on the side, 120 mm fan at the rear, asus has that copper pipe thing and big copper heatsinks on the chipsets.

I'll get another 120mm fan tomorrow for the front and see if that helps with air flow.

Ok, cleaned up the inside of the case, now there are zero wires over the motherboard, everything is off to the side and out of the way. Looks clean. 1 hour of Crysis and I had realtemp in game mode so I could watch my two core temps in real time. Never got higher than 53 C for the processor (I was happy with that for the stock fan) and when I was done I checked the motherboard and it was at 46. Those seem well within reasonable limits for temp after 1 hour of intense processor use, no?
GPU was at 55 C as well.

yep, with that chipset, its where it needs to be apparently.
