I was always on AVG, but i noticed it's not free anymore.
Is it worth taking a subscription to anything these days or are there good alternatives that are free?

I use ESET NOD32, it often gets the best score at AV-Comparatives:

AVG is still free:

The full package is a product you have to buy, but the antivirus portion of it is still free.
I should know, I'm an AVG user. I did figure out that you can't install AVG Free on a server OS though.

Yeah, started using AVG half a year ago or so, after my Norton license expired.
Good thing too, because it uses less mem and isn't as intrusive, but just quietly does its thing.
Use a custom install though, because you don't want link scanner.

I was using AVG Free right up until the latest version. They "updated" it with all sorts of annoying things that borders on being a rootkit. You'll notice that your Google searches will have icons next to links that shouldn't otherwise be there. Anyway, I found it to be rather annoying and it took me far to much time trying to figure how to disable all that crap so I made the switch to Avast, which is a pretty comparable product, also free and actually has fewer false positives.
I've been meaning to try AntiVir Free on my other computer to see how it compares to Avast.
Otherwise, I do like how I don't need an antivirus on my Linux and Mac machines.

I've been using Nod32 ever since making the move to Vista 64bit well over a year ago.

Try googling Symantec and see what happens. You may want to re-write this or go to Walmart and buy a brain.

He probably means Symantec Corporate Edition which is light years better than Norton's consumer products (or AVG/Avast for that matter).
Personally, I've been using Onecare for awhile now. I don't notice any slowdown and it does well enough for my needs at home.

You're right. Haven't checked it out since the name change. Did the new version add anything interesting?
